The second edition of Tangmai (cucumber) festival organised by the Young Paite Association was celebrated at YPA General Headquarters Hall, Hiangtam Lamka, Churachandpur today. About 10,000 pieces of organic cucumbers grown in the hills were collected and displayed during the festival. Horticulture Minister Th Shyamkumar, Agriculture Minister V Hangkhanlian and Chairman, ADC Churachandpur T Paukhanlian graced the event. Speaking on the sidelines of the event, Minister Shyamkumar urged each and everyone to cultivate the habit of producing organic food, saying depending on chemical-based food causes health issues. The theme of the festival was unity through knowledge, culture and identity. Minister Shyamkumar also said the festival not only provides a better opportunity for the farmers but also promotes their products which in turn support and boost them morally. He also urged the public to depend on the indigenous products of the state’s farmers.
Minister V Hangkhalian said a proposal for Rs 550 crore project for the welfare of the farmers has been submitted to the Centre, adding that steps for the cultivation of maize and soya in hillslopes will be taken up under the project.
