In a suspected case of custodial death, a man from Khordak Mayai Leikai of Bishnupur district was found hanging inside the lock-up of Keibul Police Station yesterday. The incident triggered a protest wherein locals of Khordak Mayai Leikai along with members of the deceased stormed the police station demanding justice. According to reports, the deceased Heisnam Sharatkumar, son of late Mani Singh, was earlier arrested by Keibul police charging him of poaching a wild swine from Keibul National Park on 14th of February. A combined team of CDO Bishnupur, Keibul Lamjao Police and Keibul Lamjao Forest Department personnel picked him up from his house and later a case was registered in connection with the case. Sharatkumar was then produced before a local court which had remanded him to police custody for eight days. As the news on his death spread, a large number of Khordak Mayai Leikai along with the members of the deceased’s family stormed Keibul Police Station in protest. There, a scuffle ensued between the protesters and the police personnel who fired tear gas canisters and mock bombs to quell them. Later, Thanga constituency MLA Tongbram Robindro accompanied by Bishnupur district Additional Superintendent of Police (L/O) Manihar, SDPO Moirang Shivkanta came at the police station and managed to defuse the situation. An expert team of Forensic Science conducted a spot enquiry on the body in the presence of family members of the deceased. MLA Robindro assured the agitating locals and the family that he would make efforts to find out the fact and circumstances leading to the death of Sharatkumar, besides extending possible help to his ailing mother, wife and three children.
One of the agitating locals expressed suspicion over the death of Sharatkumar. He said a joint action committee (JAC) has been formed to seek justice in the incident and demanded that the perpetrators should be brought to book at the earliest. He said they will not claim the body until the police find out the truth behind the death of Sharatkumar
