Units of 9 Sector Assam Rifles under the aegis of HQ IGAR (South) celebrated ‘World Ozone Day’ by organising various awareness programmes and tree plantation drives on 16 September 2019. The various events were organised by the Sector with an endeavour to raise awareness and motivate the young minds to contribute significantly towards nature preservation. Keithelmanbi Battalion celebrated the day with the students of Lilong Higher Secondary Madrasa. As part of the event, Lilong Company Operating Base (COB) organised an awareness capsule for the students in which an interactive lecture for the students to highlight the significance of environment and importance of pollution control were emphasised upon. Chingmeirong COB of Mantripukhri Battalion organised an “Awareness Programme cum Tree Plantation Drive” at Senai Sindam Residential High School and Youth Hostel, Cheingmeirong. The awareness programme commenced with an informative lecture on ‘Deforestation and Tree Plantation’ followed by a plantation drive in which students and Staff enthusiastically participated and planted tree saplings in and around the area. They also pledged their contribution to making the environment clean and green for future generations. Patsoi COB of Tulihal Battalion organised a ‘Tree Plantation Drive’ with the students and teachers of Unique Golden Cradle (UGC) School, Awang Khunao. The drive commenced with a lecture on ‘Importance of Trees’ in which the students were informed on the various benefits of tree plantation and global warming, its harmful effects and benefits of tree plantation to counter it. It was followed by a plantation drive in which the students came in huge numbers and enthusiastically participated in planting the tree saplings in the area.
The series of activities by the Units of the Sector witnessed an overwhelming response by over 500 Students and Staff of various schools with each of them appreciating the efforts of Assam Rifles for putting the environmental issues in the spotlight and recurrently taking initiatives to foster the environment-friendly measures in the State. The event concluded with tea and refreshments for all the attendees.
